Another Hallowe'en Gone

So pleased we made it through. Again, it may not seem like a big deal, but my mother died on Hallowe'en five years ago, and I don't think I could bear it if Herbie were to go the same night. My mother was in a hospice thirty miles away, and I would drive over every night after work. She wasn't really conscious much, her last few days, but I told her on the 30th that I wouldn't come over the following night, too many idiots on the roads- my father would come in the morning. She died the night of Hallowe'en, when the veil between the worlds is supposed to be at its thinnest. (So really not sure why it's the one night we throw small children out onto the streets after dark?)

There were a few fireworks last night, but I think the credit crunch has cut down on the number of huge exploding rockets. Everything seemed more restrained this year. Good job, as Holly refused to touch the drinking water with Rescue Remedy in. Herbie panted a bit, but he survived. There'll be a few more on the 5th, but the main public displays are over. Sighs of relief.

However, Hallowe'en claimed one greyhound, Magic alias Meg from Greyhound Gap. She ran away in the New Forest last Friday, and people from all over the country went to look for her. I'd hoped she was living rough, and would find her way home, but it wasn't to be. On Friday her body was found. Rest in peace, Meg. Not forgotten.

It's been fairly quiet around here on the firework fron too, thank whoever needs thanking. I think you're right about the credit crunch.

It was Thursday we found Meg, a very sad day for everyone :(

I've never heard the expression " When the veil between the worlds is supposed to be at its thinnest" before. I literally had goose pimples running down my legs. Never had goose pimples there before......

My mother died on my birthday.

I was sorry to read about Meg's death.

Fireworks for Halloween? We don't do that here in Minnesota.

Oops, sorry about getting the wrong date for Meg - it was Friday that I read about her, and must have got confused.

Ari, it's November 5th, Bonfire Night, that we have fireworks, but they get moved to whichever weekend is nearest - the night after Hallowe'en this time.

I was so sad to hear about Meg. But I am very very glad that Herbie made it through, especially given the signifance of the date for you.

It is pouring rain here in California and for that I wish Stella's bladder were the size of the moon.

Big hugs to you all.

"Please to remember the 5th of November, gunpowder, treason and plot...." I know about Guy Fawkes Day, but I didn't know the date is moveable year to year. Thanks.

I love a professional fireworks display with all the colors and shapes, but I absolutely detest the twits who start shooting off rockets a week before July 4th and continue for a week after, especially because they often do this around 3 a.m. That's hard on dogs and people.

When I think of fireworks, I think of color and designs. When some people think of fireworks, they think of making noise. It's a fundamental difference between two types of people, I guess.
